The Golden Compass relates the adventures of a girl named Lyra Bellaqua who lives in a world where everyone has his or her own personal demon, a creature which accompanies the person all of their lives. It is a world where science, theology and magic are closely interrelated.
In her ordinary life Lyra lives in Oxford, where she is friends with a boy called Roger, but her life changes drastically when Lyra and Panteleimon, her demon, prevent the murder of her uncle, powerful Lord Azriel. They overhear a conversation about the mysterious Dust particles, which threaten to destroy all worlds. Soon she finds a wonderful artifact called the aletiometer, which allows her to determine the truth about most things mysterious, but the artifact is not easy to decode.
